Learning Steps is an educational video game for preschool & kindergarten aged children. Its intent is to help reinforce the concepts preschoolers learn in school through short educational mini-games. Learning Steps is intended to be played by a small child while their parent or guardian watches and assists them when necessary. Preschool teachers and parents of preschool aged children assisted in the development of the game by assuring that Learning Steps covered age-appropriate material and by recommending improvements. Several preschoolers and kindergartners play tested the game and gave feedback, which has been incorporated.
The mini games in Learning Steps cover critical thinking, the alphabet, spelling one's name, counting, and more. The mini games are presented in an engaging manner which progresses a story line that emphasizes cooperation while appealing to young children. An additional aspect of the game is basic character creation. All of the instructions within the game are both written on the screen and narrated. That way if a child cannot read, they will still be able to play the game.
Learning Steps received the Professional's Choice Award at the Oregon Game Project Challenge (OGPC), is featured at the OMSI Mini-Maker Faire, and is a Girl Scout Gold Award project. It was developed by the OGPC team E-Lemon-Ators, which consisted of Michelle Nellis for the art and voice-overs, and Jeanine (Jeanie) Pearson, the Gold Award project leader and team leader, for the game creation and idea, research and development, and programming & development. Both Jeanie and Michelle are Girl Scouts.
